emerging Practices

in Music Education

By expanding what musical skills we teach and how we teach them, we can reach more students, many of whom were not being served by traditional music classes

Throughout the Emerging Methods in Music Education course, we explore non-traditional paths of acquiring music knowledge and underutilized areas of music education that many students have a greater connection to than general music or band and orchestra classes.

Areas of study included Mariachi, Rap and Hip Hop, Modern Band, and Songwriting. Check out some of my work for this class below!

Musical Identity deep dive!

When students walk into my classroom, they already have a musical identity… no lessons are necessary! Understanding my student's musical influences and loves helps me to tailor my lessons for the greatest relevancy. One way to get to know my students is through a “musical identity” slideshow!

Scaffolding Songwriting!

How do we prep students to write their own songs! One way is to have them write new lyrics to an existing song and challenge them to mimic the style of the original song. Here are two projects I completed where we did just that, and wrote lesson plans for our future classes.
